Christmas Gift Ideas from Original 1949 Times Newspaper

Yesterday I spent quite along time in the 1949 Times Newspaper Archives as we had a number of commemorative newspaper orders to fulfil as 1949 back issue newspapers make great 60th Birthday gifts as well as Christmas presents. In between getting these 1949 birthdate newspapers out I found these brilliant old Times Newspaper adverts which really give a true feeling of what life was like in 1949.

For all those men out there, I'm sure you are currently looking for the idea gift to treat your lovely lady. Women love thoughtful gifts, it shows you care about them - how about following the idea in this advert from an old Times Newspaper from 1949 and giving your loved one an Electrolux Cleaner, as "Electrolux Excels ... as the Gift for Her."

The caption reads,

"Give her this extra hand to simplify her home cleaning. She will appreciate the hours of leisure that this superb new electrolux will bring. No more cleaning worries for her .... not even after the Christmas party. Yes, Electrolux will make life easier for her in 1950 .... and for many, many years to come.

On second thoughts maybe don't take the advice from this 1949 newspaper as I think the only thing that you will be getting for Christmas would be a slap!

This back issue Times Newspaper Christmas gift advert (left) is for the 1949 gentleman and the love of his life - his Murray's Tobacco. I just love the bird in the cage and his speech bubble "I BELIEVE HE LOVES HIS MURRAY'S MORE THAN HER!
The caption continues,
"Murray's - No wonder! Other pleasure pall beside a pipe of Murray's Mellow Mixture. Its a grand tobacco of medium strength - the strenght most men prefer. Cool, fragrant, comforting with a flavour all of its own. Above all, it burns slowly. So Murray's last longer. That is important these days."

These above gift ideas probably worked really well in 1949 but I'm not to sure about 2009. One thing I am sure though is that these 1949 Times Newspapers make great gifts whatever the year! Christmas Gift Ideas from December 1919 Times Newspaper

Let me take you back in time to December 1919. A time when the Royal Navy's annual spending was £157 million and there was speculation that the RAF were to become a permanent force after the Great War. Britain was now at peace but John Maynard Keynes announced that "There are a lot of hard-faced men who look as if they have done rather well out of the War".
Christmas was fast approaching and people as they are today were frantically trying to find that ideal gift.

When I was in the 1919 part of the original newspaper archive I found this great gift idea section from The Times newspaper. The above picture is an actual page from one of Papers Past historic newspapers straight from the vast newspaper archives. This original newspaper page shows a few gift ideas like "Drambuie for Christmas Gifts" and "McAfee's Golf Shoes, with McAfee's rubber studs." Drambuie would've been a real treat as a Christmas gift as it was only made possible "by the removal of war restrictions," and case of three bottles were £2.19.6.

My personal favourite is the picture below, again from an original times newspaper it shows "Harrods Gifts For Men Folk" (what a great headline). So for your "Men Folk" in your life why not treat them to a lovely set of Harrods Pyjamas for "39/6" or for a special treat an " All Silk set for 50-."

Our special dated newspapers turn up some amazing adverts like the ones above so please do keep an eye out for Papers Past's future blogs and twitter updates. Trust me I've got some great adverts from 1939 newspapers, 1949 times newspapers and 1959 original newspaper but they are for another day. In the meantime if you are interested in buying a Birth date Newspaper simply visit http://www.paperspast.co.uk and let us solve your gift buying problem!

Original 1929 Birthdate Newspapers - Property Advert

Check out this property advert that I found when I was in the old newspaper archive today. I was searching through some 1929 Times newspapers for a customers birthdate newspaper and I stumbled upon this true gem!

"AN UNEXAMPLED BARGAIN
Midway between London and Brighton.
A 50-Acre estate for £5,500
A singularly charming and well-appointed residence in perfect order. Well retired from a quiet road with a pretty drive approach. 6 bedrooms, bathroom and maids sitting room."
I often find amazing property adverts like this when I'm in the Papers Past newspaper archives and wonder how much the same house would be nowadays? I reckon (guess) that this house would now be valued at around £2.5million, what do you think?
1929 newspapers make a great 80th birthday gift for the person who has got everything. Not only will they be able to see wonderful adverts like this one but they will also be able to read the news and events that were reported in their special dated newspaper.

1950 newspaper,60th gift idea,60th birthday present,Diamond wedding anniversary

1950 Times Newspapers.
In the last couple of weeks I have noticed an uptake of archive Times newspaper orders dating from 1950 and it wasn't until I sat down and worked it out that I knew the reason why. In 2010 people born in 1950 will be exactly sixty. 60th Birthdate papers make a brilliant gift idea to give to those people who say that they don't want a fuss and who seem to have got everything anyway, but the chances are that they won't have their own date of birth Times news paper.
I went in to the Papers Past, Truro 1950 Times archive and found a genuine, original paper for the fourth of January. Here are a few snippets from it:

Front page Birth Announcement: CHAPMAN. On 2 Jan 1950, at Brookfield Nursing Home, West Kirby to Jean (nee Franklin Hindle) wife of James J. Chapman - a daughter.

Some headlines: Fall in Teaching Standards
Schools Drained of Best Men
Salaries Warning
Television explained to children
New terms for purchase of Canadian Bacon
Britain has agreed to purchase 60,000,000 lb of bacon from Canada

A house advert: Harrods Estate Office, Tel. Kensington 1490
Ealing. First class situation on the Heymills Estate. Charming modern detached
residence. 3 double and one single bedroom, 2 reception rooms, Maids sitting
room, central heating throughout. Garage. Freehold £6000.

These rare 1950 old papers, when gift packed, make a unique 60th birthday gift or a wonderful present for a Diamond Wedding Anniversary. To order simply phone 01872 261220 any day between 9am and 9pm and ask for either Ian or Sam Willsher.

Birthday Newspaper Company Papers Past is on Twitter!

Our back issue newspaper archive many go back to the 19th century but Papers Past is looking to the future when it comes to social media and connecting with you our customers. With the archive holding over a 120 tons of old newspapers we have a wealth of reading material to share with you. I hold my hands up and admit that I can often be found out in the newspaper warehouse reading these original newspapers when I really should be getting on with my work as we aim to dispatch orders as soon as they are placed. I am regularly drawn towards the 1984 part of the archive as that is the year that I was born. Looking back at the 80's fashion is so amusing but I've noticed that it is now all coming back in (they do say that fashion goes in cycles). With my special dated newspaper from the day that I was born I can tell you that Family Fortunes was on the TV and that a new born Prince Harry was just settling into Royal life. I could carry on telling you about other news and events, as everything in my Birthday newspaper is so special and personal to me, and that is why birthdate newspapers make a great gift.
Blogging is a great way to share headlines and old adverts from the historic newspapers but we all lead a busy life and sometimes don't have the time to sit down and read a blog or two. That is why Papers Past can now be found on Twitter at www.twitter.com/PapersPast or just enter PapersPast in the "Find People" search a link is also at www.paperspast.co.uk . Twitter is a great way to share short newspaper headlines, news and events of the day along with communicating with our followers. A new feature which we will be posting on our blog page and also on Twitter will highlight descriptions and actual photos from old Times newspapers of houses for sale, job adverts, product adverts ( I can remember seeing one of the first Polo mint adverts in a 1948 newspaper) and fashion of the time. These photos will come direct from Papers Past's newspaper archive so you will have a behind the scenes look at the old newspaper collection. We" Tweet" (post) daily on Twitter so why not follow us and amaze your freinds and family with interesting historical headlines, news and facts. Sam Willsher www.paperspast.co.uk

1939 Archive Newspapers, Genuine Times Newspaper, Old newspapers

1939 Times Newspaper.
I've done it again. Guilty as charged. Instead of packing and posting customers birthdate and anniversary newspapers last week I couldn't resist the temptation to sit and read a particularly interesting November 1939 Times newspaper. Don't worry though, I still managed to post off that days orders on time, in fact despite having a really busy week nearly every order was dispatched same day as received which was excellent.
The newspaper in question was 3rd November 1939. This genuine, original, full and complete archive edition was absolutely fascinating. Some of the wartime headlines included Shelter Scheme Criticized, The Queen at Babies Hospital, Damage to Telephone Boxes and Soldiers Woolen Vests. I was reading real news headlines from real papers.
How about this for an advert: How to feel better and think cheerfully - A Doctors Advice - Guinness is good for you!
A couple of the crossword clues did catch me out: 21 across The stern calling of authorship, and 11 across Bird lacking knowledge. I cheated and looked up the answers in the following days Times ( 21a Grim, 11a Chic).
Finally I have got to tell you about just three of the many adverts. How about: Cotswold Residence, Rent £85 per annum, 5 beds, 2 rec.
27 Upper Berkeley St. W.1. Serviced rooms, H&C, 25/- inc. breakfast.
Overlooking Surrey Golf Course, 5 bed roomed house, £3850.
Just a snapshot of news and adverts from the 3.11.39 newspaper. I issued its Certificate of Authenticity and sent it on its way for someones birthday present but the good thing is that there are still 120 tons of other editions to choose from including those 1939's. They certainly make fantastic ideas for birth dates and anniversary gifts.
